Difficile inventare qualcosa di nuovo nel mondo dei poppers, ma c'è ampio spazio per rifinire e mischiare design conosciuti. Quanto volevo ottenere questa volta era un artificiale che lavorasse sia sopra che sott'acqua, senza lo scodinzolio tipico dei poppers nuotatori, tipo l' SW per capirci, ma con una plasmabilità di movimenti affine a uno stickbait... non facilissimo ma credo di esserci andato vicino.
Questo in foto è l'ultimo prototipo della serie, quello definitivo, 14 centimetri per 60 grammi anche se nelle idee ci sono delle taglie sia più piccole che più grandi; la livrea della foto è puramente una finitura da prove sul campo, con tutte le tonalità più ricorrenti, anche se tagliata col machete....
Ha nuotato una settimana a Cuba, in un momento ove gli stick facevano tutta la differenza del mondo; il bello è che a canna alta può essere popperato con disinvoltura, nei limiti di rumore di una bocca comunque volontariamente mantenuta discreta, mentre a canna bassa si immerge con movimento serpentino e grazie al lavoro di canna possiamo impartirgli guizzi e spanciate tipiche di un pesce in difficoltà motorie.. ne sono molto soddisfatto, e pure i pesci l'hanno gradito molto, in particolare i carangidi ad acqua immobile e cristallina, condizione in cui diventano fetenti come non mai...
Ne ho appena sfornati una discreta quantità in colori classici ( sardina, chartreuse, rosa... ), un po' per chi me li ha già chiesti ,un po' per uso personale.. vediamo quanto dureranno; per le altre taglie invece serve un po' di lavoro sul campo, dato che devo trovare la loro giusta bilanciatura.
It's hard to inventing something new about poppers, but we can always experiment mixing the carachteristicks of known designs. This time I wanted a lure capable of working over and under the surface film, without the tipical wobbling of swimming poppers, like my SW, but with an array of movements similar to a stickbait.
This is the final prototype and I think I've achieved what I was looking for; it's 14 cm long and weights 60 grams, but in the future I'm planning smaller and bigger sizes; please don't look at the finish, just a simple one I use in my fishing models to keep work easy, simple colors and a bit of flash.. I know it looks as chopped with a machete but fishes like it.
It swam in cuban waters with very good results in a moment in which the stickbaits made all the difference; it has been poppered on top, without too much noise due to the discreet mouth, and worked underwater with the rod tip held low, with a snaking movement that can be mixed with the tipical belly flashes of a struggling baitfish just with little twitches of the rod.
I liked it a lot, and also the fishes appreciated it, especially big jacks in calm and transparent waters, condition that can be tough.
I just produced a limited quantity in popular colors ( sardine, pink, yellow.. ), some to fullfill request of friends an some for my personal tackle box; for the other sizes I'll have to do more field testing in order to achieve the perfect balance.
In the summer work is harder for this little cigar shaped lure, dolphinfishes are coming..... not only in the Med as this one of Stefano was caught in Madagascar on a sardine color Habano130:
